Hi Monica. I took some quick photos of
the second cup, (which is in the possesion of another of Joseph
Fairhurst's descendents), but they did not turn out very well.
However, it is almost identicle to the first cup, (shown on the
Institute's website), with the exception of the inscription on the
back of the cup.
The first cup was awarded "For improving
11 statute Acres of Land by Floating".
The second cup was awarded "To Joseph
Fairhurst of Minshull Vernon for having improved twelve acres of
meadow and pasture land by throwing water over it in the most
judicious manner. 1828".
The farm was "Lower Elm Farm", in the
1841 census it was shown as "Lower Hams Farm".
I think we can safely assume that both
awards probably refer to some form of irrigation or watering of the
land. Now, I need to find the other two cups and the medal.
Regards,
Alan Fairhurst.

Hi Monica. Don't know if you remember me
but I contacted you in 2005 regarding a silver cup awarded to one of
my ancestors by the Agricultural Society in Manchester in the
1800's. We believe there was originally 4 cups. I've now traced a
second cup. The owner is visiting me at the end of the week and I
will send you details of the second cup. This one has travelled to
South Africa and back.
Regards,
Alan Fairhurst.

Alan asks
Do you know about this cup? It has inscribed on it -
Front: Agricultural Society Instituted
At Manchester MDCCLXV11
Back: To Joseph Fairhurst of Minshull
Vernon. For Improving 11 Statute Acres of Land by Floating
My research indicates that the cup may
have been presented to a Joseph Fairhurst who was baptized in 1777
at Woolston. He later turned up as a Farmer at Minshull Vernon.
In his will, dated 16th. July 1833, he
mentions - four silver cups, one medal and one sword
Also - What is meant by the term
"Floating"
please email any ideas about it to
Alan Fairhurst and
Monica Lee
