The
showground...
The Royal
Lancashire Agricultural Society can trace its roots back to 1767 and
is the oldest Agricultural Show in the country. Originally
peripatetic, in recent ears the Royal Lancashire Show has become
more static. It enjoyed many successful years in Blackpool,
Blackburn and, until 2002 at Chorley.
Eventually in 2003 the
show moved to a larger site at Salesbury.
The show remained there until 2006. The 2007 Show was
cancelled, along with many others across the UK, because of
appalling weather. Ever-increasing
numbers of exhibitors and visitors means that it is important that
the Show continues to grow and keep pace with demand. For that
reason the Society will move into a permanent, purpose-built
home for the Show in 2008 as part of the Duke of Lancaster Park at
Billsborrow.
The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society is enthusiastic about
the show site which offers a beautiful setting for what is
Lancashire's premier Agricultural Show. It has given the show organisers an opportunity to rethink
the layout and content of the whole show and with the reintroduction
of the sheep, cattle, pig, goat and dairy sections the show is
now better than ever.
There
is plenty of room for the very popular Countryside Section
where visitors can see the many crafts and skills that
go into maintaining both the rural landscape and the country way of
life. The Royal Lancashire Show's Light Horse section attracts
nearly 2000 entries and both the ridden and in-hand classes draw
considerable interest from spectators as they try to identify the
many different breeds of native ponies that take part.
The
Royal Lancashire Show has always prided itself on its close ties
with Agriculture and has set itself out to offer the industry an
excellent shop window. However, there is much more to a show than
the animals, and set amidst such scenic beauty, with the excellent
main ring entertainment, hundreds of trade stands and catering to
suit all tastes. Without doubt, the Royal
Lancashire Show offers an excellent day out for all the family.
