A brief History of the Society
The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Show is one of the oldest County
Shows in the United Kingdom, its roots being traced back to 1767.
Its origins are derived from the amalgamation of three Societies, The
Manchester Agricultural Society, The Liverpool Agricultural Society
and The Royal North Lancashire Agricultural Society.
Royal patronage was received from Queen Victoria in 1893 to become as
it is known today, The Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society.
Since then the Show has been held in most of the main towns within the
old county borders of Lancashire and has been annually , other than
during the two world wars.
In recent years the event has been held at
Witton Park, Blackburn 1980-1985
Aintree Race Course 1986-1987
Astley Park, Chorley 1988-2002
Salesbury Hall, Ribchester
2003-2006
Before moving to it’s present venue at
South Plank
Farm, Barton, in 2008

The Society’s objectives are……….
…..” the encouragement and general advancement of the science and
practice of agricultural and horticulture including improvements in
the breeding and rearing of livestock, the invention and improvement
of implements and machinery and the encouragement of husbandry skills
and of all countryside based crafts, industries, sports and pastimes.
In addition The Society should advance the education of both urban and
rural dwellers concerning agriculture and country based industries
activities and crafts of a non political nature in the interest of
those who depend upon the countryside for their support, and
encourage a greater understanding of rural populations by urban
populations.”
To help attain these objectives the Society organises it’s annual
Show.

Media coverage has always been excellent with both pre Show and Show
periods receiving attention from Regional Press, Television and Radio,
helping to make the event extremely high profile throughout the North
West and in particular the County area. Indeed Radio Lancashire
traditionally broadcast live form the Showground on each of the three
days having a significant presence on site with their own stage and
the Radio Lancashire Bus.

To organise this annual event takes a great deal of time and
dedication, much of which is given freely by volunteers.
The other basic necessity is money.
Sponsorship is one of the main revenue streams available to the
Society and can take many forms.
